In the simplest case, two molecules collide and combine to form a new molecule. In this type of reaction, an atom or molecule is added to a molecule or atom. ![]() Some common oxidation reactions include the corrosion of metal, the browning of fruit, and the combustion of fuel. In other words, it is the chemical reaction that occurs when a substance is exposed to oxygen. The process of oxidation is the loss of electrons. Chemical Properties of Carbon CompoundsĬarbon compounds can exist as gases, liquids, or solids, depending on the temperature and the pressure.Ĭarbon dioxide is a gas at standard temperature and pressure.Ĭarbon monoxide is a gas at standard temperature and pressure.Ĭarbon tetrachloride is a liquid at standard temperature and pressure.Ĭarbon black is a solid at standard temperature and pressure. This is why it is important to handle organic chemicals with care. Toxicity – Many organic compounds are toxic, and can cause serious health problems if ingested or inhaled. This structural diversity is one of the things that makes organic chemistry so interesting and complex.Ĥ. Structure – Organic molecules have a variety of different structures, which can be determined through chemical analysis. This makes them useful for a variety of purposes, including the production of plastics and other synthetic materials.ģ. Reactivity – Organic molecules are highly reactive, due to the presence of carbon-hydrogen bonds. This is because water is a polar molecule, and organic molecules are also polar.Ģ. Solubility in water – Organic compounds are usually soluble in water, although there are a few exceptions. Some of the most common properties of organic compounds include:ġ. There are many different types of carbon compounds, each with its own set of unique properties. Organic chemistry is the study of carbon-containing compounds. This allows them to form very complex molecules, such as the DNA molecule that carries the genetic information in all living cells. Carbon atoms can form covalent bonds with other atoms by sharing electrons. The electrons form three pairs, with each pair occupying one of the three electron shells that surround the nucleus. Carbon AtomĬarbon atoms have six protons in their nucleus and six electrons orbiting around it. Carbon is the basis of all organic life and the most common element in the Earth’s crust. It is nonmetallic and tetravalent-making four bonds with other atoms, including hydrogen. Since sodium has 11 protons, the number of neutrons must be 23 – 11 = 12 neutrons.Carbon is a chemical element with symbol C and atomic number 6. The mass number of an element tells us the number of protons AND neutrons in an atom (the two particles that have a measurable mass). This tells us that sodium has 11 protons and because it is neutral it has 11 electrons. We know that the atomic number of sodium is 11. The mass number is given at the top left of the elements symbol, for example, sodium has a mass number of 23. ![]() This is why elements in the same group of the Periodic Table have similar properties. It is the number of outer electrons that give an element its chemical properties. ![]() The second energy level is also full, holding eight electrons and one electron remaining in the outer energy level. The first two fill the innermost energy level. The first energy level (the one nearest the nucleus) can hold a maximum of two electrons with the others being able to hold up to a maximum of 8 electrons (only true for the first 20 elements).Ī sodium atom contains 11 electrons orbiting a nucleus in 3 levels, 2 in the lowest, then 8, then 1 These energy levels can only hold a certain number of electrons. All the electrons are arranged into energy levels. The electron arrangement of all atoms can be found in the data booklet. Since atoms are neutral, we know then that sodium atoms must also have 11 negative electrons to cancel the charge from 11 positive protons. This is written at the bottom left hand side of the symbol. The atomic number of an element tells you how many protons that the element has.
